Transformation

This work has evolved from my ceramic sculptures which utilise rocks and sedements collected during walks in the Highland Landscape. My work is therefore of the land in inspiration and origin.

Since 1994 I have consciously documented walks by direct alchemical process where the walk and the rocks collected during the walk are fused to gatherer into an 8 inch square ceramic tile. This documentary device therefore is a transformed, lived experience.

The open curve of this installation symbolises the organic and undermined nature of my walks as well as distancing this documentation from the formalised geometry of photography as used by other artists who have recorded their walks and land based art.

Throughout the history of western art we can recognise a profound inherent fear of nature manifested through a necessity to impose structure upon it. Such a willful desire to tame and progress by blindly ignoring natural forces has brought western culture to points of crisis. Transformation seeks to escape from western dogmas by offering new possibilities.
